Heparin is a blood thinner. It is commonly used in emergency rooms and dialysis centers to prevent blood clots. The active ingredient in heparin is made from membranes of pig intestines, which is supplied by the Chinese plant Changzhou SPL. The FDA has inspected the plant, but has been unable at this time, to locate the root cause of the problems linked to Baxter International's heparin.
Baxter recalled nine lots of heparin multi-dose when four deaths and hundreds of allergic reactions were reported. The death toll as of March 2, 2008, has risen to 21 people, and Baxter has now recalled all brands of heparin.
The tainted heparin has induced severe allergic reactions, severe nausea, vomiting, diaphoresis, difficulty breathing and extremely low blood pressure.
Baxter is the largest maker of heparin, however, alternate heparin manufacturers are expected to be able to increase heparin production in sufficient quantities to satisfy the US market.
