New York, NY - An infant's garment made in China was recalled this week by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission after it was found that a series of snaps used to fasten the garment could detach, posing a choking hazard to infants.
The Taggies Sleep'n Play Infant Garments were imported by Rashti & Rashti of New York City and were sold at Buy Buy Baby, Dillards, Nordstrom, and other specialty stores and Internet retailers nationwide from June 2007 through May 2008 for about $20.
The garments are one-piece footed coveralls with snaps down the front. The problem is that these snaps can detach, or come off without warning, posing an immediate choking hazard for an infant. While a caregiver might take care to ensure there are no hazards immediately around an infant—and especially drawstrings that could entangle an infant's head and restrict the air supply—a caregiver could not expect that an infant safely ensconced in a crib with no known hazards, could choke from the detachment of a simple snap used to fasten the coveralls.
So far, no injuries have been reported. About 6,200 of the garments have been sold and are subject to the recall. The coveralls were sold in purple or blue-and-white in sizes zero-to-three months, three-to-six months and six-to-nine months. RN #27829 is imprinted on the care label sewn into the garment.
